Unheralded Patrick Jarrett from NYIT was victorious in the 60 Meter Dash,  upsetting  Ja Warren Hooker, the 1998 NCAA Indoor Track 55-meter champion and the third-place finisher in the 100 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships.

The victory by the 25-year-old New York Tech runner over the Washington sophomore came at the inaugural New York Sports Museum Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center (new resurfaced banked Indoor Facility).

Jarrett, the New York state 100 and 200 champion in 1990 and 1991, first beat the injured Hooker in the trial heats in 6.77 seconds to 6.89, then came back 30 minutes later and won the final in 6.73.

Hooker, competing with his left foot heavily taped because of shin splints, finished second in 6.77.

Later, Jarrett won the 200 in a sparkling 21.21, faster than his outdoor best by .01 seconds. Andrew Pierce of Ohio State was second; Hooker finished fourth in 21.82. Jarrett was the 98 Metropolitan  Conference Indoor Track Champion at 200 Meters (22.23).

Other outstanding efforts in the 10-team competition:

Andrew Pierce (Ohio State) won the 400 in 46.85, breaking the Armory record, and anchored Ohio State to victory in the 1,600 relay with a 400 leg of 45.6. The Buckeyes were timed in 3:10.29.

Villanova Women: NCAA Div I Cross-Country Team Champions.

Villanova's Carmen Douma, the NCAA indoor mile champion and the NCAA outdoor 1,500-meter champion, ran away from the field in the women's field, winning by about 50 meters in 4:51.69. And Villanova's Carrie Tollefson, the NCAA 5,000-meter cross country champion, took the women's 3,000 in 9:33.74.

And Dominique Calloway, an NCAA finalist in last year's outdoor championships, led a 1-2 Ohio State finish in the women's 60-meter hurdles. Calloway was timed in 8.34, making her a provisional qualifier for this year's NCAA indoor championships. Donika Merriman was second at 8.40.

George Mason's Angie Brown, the NCAA long jump champion, won the Womens Long Jump with a  leap of 19 feet, 11 1-2 inches.
