 Headline Story - 99 Gasparilla Distance Classic
 What a difference a year makes ....

 Local athletes dominated the Gasparilla Distance Classic for the first
 time in the history of the race, with winners from Tampa and  St. Petersburg.
 The Gasparilla, one of Florida's longest-running road races, has
 opted to bid farewell to its international field to better embrace locals.
 Saturday's windswept 22nd Gasparilla 15-kilometer and 5k races
 certainly had a provincial feel to them. University of South Florida
 sophomore Russ Gerbers powered through a strong north wind on Bayshore
 Boulevard to take the overall 15k title in a time of 46 minutes, 48 seconds. 
 St. Petersburg's Laura Drake was the women's winner in 54:33. 
 Nine of the first 10 finishers in the men's race live in Tampa, and all
 but two of the top 10 women hail from local Florida counties.
   
  Check out last years Results, where elite runners were chasing the more 
  than $50,000 Gasparilla prize money; The prize money is now gone.
   
  The board of directors decided to drop prize money. 
   
  Gerbers' winning time was the event's slowest ever - by several minutes - 
  while only the women's  winner in the inaugural Gasparilla 15k posted 
  a time slower than Drake's. 
     
  And if there were any strong sentiments against the absence of the
 usual busload of foreign stars, it was hard to tell from Saturday's
 turnout, one of the best ever at 13,778 combined entries in the two
 races.
