title (98 Winning Time: 2:11:23) with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 56 seconds, leading a
1-2-3 Kenyan finish an identical finish to the 1998 race.
Tatiana Pozdnyakova was the Womens Champion with a time of 2:33:23; Pozdnyakova
won at Houston in 1995 and in 1996.
The 43- year old Pozdnyakova took the lead at the 22 Mile mark and cruised home to the
victory. Zinaida Semenova of Russia finished second at 2:36:23.
Elfenseh Alemu of Ethiopia led much of the race before fading to third at 2:37:05.
Each first-place finisher received $25,000.
More than 5,000 runners braved the 93 percent humidity and temperatures in the
70s (by race end). Streets were slippery from early morning dew. There were 4,300 Plus
Offiicial Finishers .
Ndungu beat countrymen Sammy Maritim and Gideon Mutisya. Ndungu, took the lead for good
at the 19th mile. Maritim was second at 2:15:05 and Mutisya third at 2:15:14.
